The workshops will be held during activity hour, 1:30 to 2:30, in the 3rd floor classroom of the Ronald Williams Library and are open to the NEIU community.

The library will again be offering hands-on workshops on RefWorks, a citation management tool that allows users to add references directly from databases, organize references into folders, and output bibliographies in many different formats. Refworks is available to all NEIU students, faculty, and staff through a Library subscription. This semester’s workshops will be held:

Tuesday, 1/29, 10-11 am CANCELED
Monday, 2/4, 6-7 pm
Thursday, 2/7, 2-3 pm
Wednesday, 3/5, 2-3 pm
Saturday, 3/15, 11:30 am-12:30 pm
Friday, 4/4, 11 am-12 pm
Wednesday, 4/16, 4-5 pm

All workshops will be held in the Library’s 3rd floor classroom. To register for a workshop, visit the Reference Desk on the 1st floor or call 773-442-4410.

RefWorks, a citation manager recently purchased by the Library, is now available to all NEIU faculty, students, and staff. Come to one of our workshops to learn how to set up a free account, add new citations to your collection, and organize your collection with folders. We will also demonstrate Write-N-Cite, a feature of RefWorks that allows users to insert citations directly into Microsoft Word documents and automatically generate bibliographies.

Workshops will be offered:
Thursday, September 27 at 2:00 PM
Monday, October 8 at 1:00 PM
Saturday, October 20 at 11:30 AM
Wednesday, October 24 at 4:00 PM
Tuesday, November 6 at 11:00 AM
Friday, November 16 at 10:00 AM

The process of accessing and evaluating information is increasingly complex given the plethora of information available. As the introduction to the Information Literacy tutorial states: “Information is available from many sources and in many formats, such as printed text, television, videos, library databases, web sites, and more. To be ‘information literate’ you need to know why, when, and how to use all of these tools and how to think critically about the information they provide.”

The Information Literacy tutorial adapted by Michael Weinberg is now available online. It includes an explanation of the types of resources available, where to find them and how to select the best resources for research. A follow-up assessment/quiz is available to upload to Blackboard courses or to distribute in print format.
