The 1st floor is noisy!

Bill writes:

Can staff at the library please encourage students to follow basic
library courtesies? It has been quite difficult studying in the
library the past few weeks because of individuals talking to one
another in normal to loud voices, people talking on their cell phones,
etc. I have witnessed library staff completely ignoring all of this
and it is pretty discouraging.

Dave Green, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Information Services replies:

Hello Bill. I will talk with our reference coordinator and the reference librarians and ask them to take a more active role in helping reduce this problem. Thanks for voicing your concerns.

Duplex printing in the library?

Annette writes:

At the beginning of the semester we received the university’s letter on the new paper saving policy of the university. I thought they also mentioned that there was a default setting for double sided printing from now on. I’m very disappointed to find that I don’t even have a choice to print double sided in the library. It certainly would save a lot of paper and cost.
Please consider a change!

Dave Green, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Information Services replies:

Hello Annette.  We have already ordered the new parts and software for our printers to upgrade them so that this feature will be available.  We should have our printers upgraded by the end of this semester if not sooner.  You will then be able to do duplex printing in the library.   Thanks for your patience!

How about a copy machine on the 1st floor?

Amanda says:

So far, my experiences with the library have been positive. As a suggestion, it would be helpful to have a copy machine located on the first floor of the library to copy reference materials instead of lugging everything up to the second floor. It can be challenging, if you are in the middle of research with multiple texts, to relocate to the second floor to make copies. Thanks for your time and keep up the good work.

Dave Green, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Information Services replies:

Hi Amanda. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I will contact the Copy Center supervisor and see if we can get one of the machines relocated to the 1st floor.

Smile more!

An inspirational student writes:

The only thing I would love to see in this library is for people to SMILE more. Especially the librarians on the second floor.

Dave Green, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Information Services replies:

I’ll tell them! Get back to us later this semester and let us know if we are doing a better job of smiling. :)

Can the Library purchase our textbooks?

A student comments:

I wanted to make a suggestion that the Northeastern library purchase at least ONE copy of the textbooks required for every class at Northeastern.

Upon learning on the first day of class what books are required, many times it is cheaper to purchase the book online than at the schools bookstore. However cheap, buying a book online means it can take many days for the book to arrive. It would be nice in this time frame, if I could go to Northeastern’s library, and pick up a Reference copy of the textbook I need and make photocopies of at least the first one or two chapters to keep me on track with the class until my textbook online order arrives. I think this would benefit Northeastern students who choose to purchase books online to save money. Instead of a week or so of not having the textbook at all, at least they can be sure they can at least make some photocopies from the library to keep them on track. Thank you for your time!

Dave Green, Associate University Librarian for Collections and Information Services replies:

The librarians recognize the difficulties students face with what has been designated as the “Textbook Crisis.” Last semester, I met with a representative of the Student Government and we briefly discussed this issue.  I certainly would be interested in continuing that discussion with the Student Government and others to create a task force to find ways of minimizing the impact of the skyrocketing prices of textbooks.

Unfortunately, if the library purchased a copy of each textbook at the start of the semester, we would not have any money to buy any other books for the library. Traditionally, university libraries have pursued purchasing what is called “primary materials” which would support research by students and faculty.  This actually excludes textbooks.  In fact, most university libraries formally state in their collection policies that except in special cases, textbooks will not be purchased by the library.

Still, there may be a role that the library can play in helping solve or at least reduce this issue for students.  We are certainly willing to partner with others in the university to come up with some possible solutions.
